GS1 Belux data model: why your catalogue changes every quarter
Product data isn’t a one-off project
Many wholesalers and retailers exchange product data through the GS1 data pool (GDSN): one standardised flow from manufacturer to trading partner, with images, attributes and logistics data. For the DIY, garden and pet sectors there is a dedicated data model - and it doesn’t stand still.
For those sectors GS1 Belux publishes four data-model releases a year. Each time, validation rules are tightened, attributes added or changed, and GPC categories activated. A recent example: version 3.1.36 was published on 15 June 2026 and goes into production on 22 August 2026.
Four times a year the bar moves
The cycle is predictable - published around December, March, June and September, live around February, May, August and November - but that doesn’t make it optional. Data that was perfectly compliant last quarter can, after a new release, suddenly miss a required field, hold an invalid value or fall into a changed category.
For a single brand, that’s manageable. For anyone running dozens of suppliers and tens of thousands of items, it’s a recurring data obligation that is never really finished.
What it means for suppliers and retailers
- Compliance is a snapshot: it holds until the next release.
- Every supplier and brand has to be checked separately against the current model.
- Missing or changed fields have to be correct in several languages.
- Retailers that require GS1 compliance can reject or block non-compliant items.
Staying compliant without burning a quarter
A few habits keep it manageable:
- Follow the release calendar. Know when a new version is published and goes live, so you’re ready in time.
- Map your product data to the current model. Keep one canonical source that you check against the current validations.
- Check on every release. Required fields, GPC bricks and validation rules should be re-checked automatically, not by sampling.
- Automate the re-check. Reviewing thousands of items by hand on every release is exactly the work that introduces errors.
From quarterly stress to routine
The point: product-data management isn’t a project with an end date but a process on a fixed clock. That process can be outsourced. Our service CatalogOps ingests supplier files, checks them - for data-model and GPSR fields among others - and only publishes to Odoo and your webshop after approval. A new GS1 release then becomes a scheduled re-check rather than a quarterly crisis.
